Floyd County Commissioners are expected to discuss a possible water rate increase during their pre-meeting caucus on Tuesday.

A rate increase of 15 percent for 2025 is being recommended to get the county back in line with where it needs to be with its five-year capital improvement program. The increase would mean an extra $3.92 a month for the typical water customer.

There has not been a water rate increase for county customers since 2013, and since that time costs have increased, some dramatically, over the past 12 years.

“We have realized savings from external sources over the last 10 or 12 years, and we have done a great job with that,” said Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord during a recent public utilities and transportation committee meeting. “The diversity of our connectivity has grown and given us some options in what’s in our best interest. We’ve also grown our system, but everybody is aware that utilities, chlorine, fluoride, chemical, and treatment costs have increased. In some instances, we’ve doubled if not quadrupled costs. We’ve held steady as long as we can.”

The commission will also get an update from Missy Kendrick with the Rome-Floyd County Development Authority during the caucus, which starts at 4 p.m.

During the regular meeting at 6, the commission will conduct a second reading for a special use permit request for farm equipment sales and service at 4065 Martha Berry Highway and a public hearing for the closure of a portion of North Drive.

The commission will also recognize Shaylan Johnson, Gregory Greene, and John Ware as part of African American History Month.
