-Rome Police Department News Release-

The Rome Police Department completed the investigation of a fatal traffic collision that occurred on April 4, 2025, at the intersection of Shorter Avenue and Dellwood Drive.
At 8:49 p.m., officers were dispatched to the scene of a serious injury accident involving a motorcycle. Upon arrival, it was determined that the crash had resulted in a fatality. The Rome Police Department Accident Investigation Team (AIT) was requested and responded to process the scene.
The investigation revealed that Driver 1, Jasmen Labronze Lofton, 44, of Rome, was operating a vehicle eastbound on Shorter Avenue. Evidence showed that Vehicle #1 made an improper left turn from the inside travel lane rather than the designated center turning lane. In addition to turning movements, Driver 1 failed to yield to oncoming traffic while attempting a left turn. These actions placed Vehicle #1 in the direct path of Vehicle #2, a motorcycle traveling westbound in the inside lane, operated by Jeffrey Scott Nelson, 60, of Rome.
Driver #2 was ejected from his vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. Formal charges have been filed against Driver #1 for Homicide by Vehicle in the Second Degree, and Improper Left Turn.
