The Rome-Floyd County Planning Commission will consider a rezoning request for a proposed data center near Coosa High School when it meets on Thursday.
The property at 156 Vann Drive is currently zoned Suburban Residential, and the applicant is seeking a change to Heavy Industrial.
Planning staff notes that data centers require a substantial amount of water and electricity, as well as fiber optic, so infrastructure upgrades would be needed. In general, data centers have a very limited impact on traffic, streets, or schools, the staff report noted.
Thursday’s planning commission meeting begins at 2:30 p.m. in the Sam King Room at Rome City Hall.
The planning commission will hear a rezoning and special use permit requests for a restaurant and customer service at 2045 Morrison Campground Road. Plans are for an open barn for a garden center and a closed barn for a café.
Other agenda items include a special use permit for a Christian Retreat on Smith Road, a rezoning from Heavy Industrial to Community Commercial for 4729 Alabama Highway, and a rezoning from Light Industrial to Suburban Residential at 68 Pierce Hill Road.
Other applications include a change from Light Industrial to Community Commercial for 196 North Avenue, and a rezoning from Duplex Residential to High Density Traditional Residential on Nixon Avenue.
A special use permit for a duplex at 35 Heard Street will also go before the planning commission as well as an annexation request for 115 East Boundary Street.
