U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is pressuring the U.S. Postal Service to recruit a competent Postmaster General who can address mail delays in Georgia.

Following the resignation of former Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, Sen. Ossoff is urging the USPS Board of Governors to replace him with leadership that can solve the continued delays with on-time mail delivery across Georgia.

“It is crucial that the postal service be led by someone competent-by someone who is hired on their merit and not by their political connections,” Ossoff said. “That is exactly what I am urging the USPS Board of Governors to do. Georgians have now paid the price for a year and a half of incompetent management by a patronage hire.”

Postal delays have had real consequences, from seniors waiting for their prescriptions and small businesses being unable to get their products to market to W2 forms not arriving on time.

“It’s been just an embarrassment,” Ossoff said. “Folks are getting into hot water with the IRS because their returns are getting lost. People are missing notices to appear in court. I’ve heard stories about people who have gotten warrants, not because they did anything wrong, but because they got a notice to appear in court, and the letter never came. The court thinks they are blowing off the letter,r and they issue a warrant. I mean, that’s scary stuff.”

According to data released by USPS last month, the Georgia District’s overall first-class mail service is 7.7 percent below the national average.
