Thursday, Rome/Floyd 911 dispatch received a call reporting a structure fire at 15 Wakefield Place NW, near Elliott Drive NW in the Garden Lakes area.
According to information provided by Rome-Floyd Fire Division Chief Jamie Stone, while first responder units were en route, they were advised that a person may be trapped inside the residence.
The first unit arrived on scene at 4:30 PM, encountering heavy smoke and fire showing from the one-story home.
Firefighters initiated an interior attack on the blaze and conducted a search for any occupants.
One adult was located inside the structure and quickly removed by crews. The individual succumbed to injuries sustained during the fire.
The name of that victim has not been released at the time of this preliminary report.
Fire crews had the fire under control by 4:44 p.m. and achieved full extinguishment by 4:48 PM – No firefighters were injured.
Chief Stone noted that a representative from the State Fire Marshal’s Office assisted with the investigation into the fire, which is currently still ongoing.
