-News Release-

Chief Denise Downer-McKinney announces that an assessor from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will be in Rome from June 23–26,2025, to conduct an on-site assessment of the Rome Police Department. This evaluation includes a comprehensive review of the department’s policies, procedures, management practices, operations, and support services.
The purpose of the assessment is to verify that the Rome Police Department continues to meet the rigorous standards set by CALEA. Accreditation through CALEA is a prestigious, voluntary process that demonstrates a commitment to professional excellence in law enforcement and public safety.
As part of the assessment, members of the public and agency personnel are invited to provide written comments regarding the department’s compliance with accreditation standards. The only method for public comment is through CALEA’s online public comment portal, accessible at www.romepolice.com.
The assessment team is composed of experienced public safety professionals from out-of-state agencies. During their visit, they will review official documents, interview staff, and observe operations to evaluate the department’s adherence to CALEA standards.
Following the assessment, the team will report its findings to the full CALEA Commission, which will then determine the agency’s reaccreditation status. If granted, accreditation will be valid for four years, during which the Rome Police Department must provide regular documentation to affirm continued compliance.
