The Rome City Commission will hold another vote on the millage rate.
“It was brought to our attention at the Monday night meeting that our 5-year millage history chart did not meet the state requirements,” said Rome City Manager Sammy Rich. “Even though our practice for years has been to do a five-year history, the state statute technically requires a present year and the five prior years. So in our case, the year 2020 was omitted from the advertisement.”
The city is required to submit the advertising documentation to both Floyd County and the Georgia Department of Revenue, which gets done each year when the millage rate is set.
“After consulting with our Tax Commissioner, Kevin Payne, who consulted with the Georgia Department of Revenue, the remedy is to simply correct the advertisement and hold another vote by the commission,” Rich added. Our goal will be to take up the matter at the August 11 City Commission Meeting. This should rectify the error without creating any issues or scheduling delay, as Floyd County is slated to vote on their millage rate at their August 12 meeting. While I regret our advertisement did not meet the state requirements, it was simply done in error, but it does appear to be a simple remedy to provide a cure.”
At the August 11 meeting, Rich will share more historic information, looking as far back as a 20-year history of the millage rate in the city.
“As always, we welcome the public to join our meetings and engage with the process as we work to provide vital services to the community,” he said.
