Friday is the first day of school for Rome City, Floyd County students

-Staff reports-

Rome and Floyd County students return to class Friday morning for the first day of a new school year, so that familiar morning routine is back — and so are school zones.

As buses roll out and crosswalks fill with little feet, the Rome Police Department is asking motorists to please slow down and stay alert.

Speeding through a school zone doesn’t just earn you a ticket — it puts lives in danger.

Watch for children crossing unexpectedly, and watch for crossing guards and school signs.

Be aware of reduced speed limits during posted times in school zones.

Police officers will be present and watching.

The Floyd County Police Department is reminding the public to slow down as reduced speed limits in school zones will be active and enforced.

Kids can be unpredictable, so keep your eyes on the road and stay alert.

Watch crosswalks and yield to pedestrians.

And stop for buses. Every child deserves to safely exit their bus.

Do not pass school buses, because this could lead to a preventable accident.
