Following a redesigned site plan, which is compliant with a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-approved process, work is finally getting started on the new Floyd County Agricultural Center.
The discovery of wetlands during timber clearing in 2024 delayed the project.
Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord gave an update on Tuesday.
“Our Ag Center had some borings done near the building foundations a week before last,” he said. “We are hopefully waiting for the report this week—the building foundations—and then moving forward with the grading plan later this fall.”
The Agricultural Center is a citizen-submitted Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax project, approved by voters in 2017.
The site plans include a main event building featuring several large, multi-use spaces which can be combined to accommodate gatherings of over 500 people. The building will also house conference suites, catering-accessible kitchens, and offices for the Agriculture Center, 4-H, and Extension.

McCord also gave an update on the renovations at the joint law enforcement center downtown.
“We had an LEC renovations meeting last week, where there were some measurements made on the first floor,” he said. “We also got notified that the city would be out of that building with their evidence by 10-15-25, which is the middle of next month.”
The conversion of the law enforcement center into additional courtroom space came about as part of last year’s local option sales tax negotiations.
Floyd County Police have moved to a new headquarters at the former Glenwood Primary School site, while Rome Police, with the exception of their evidence room, are in a temporary location off Technology Parkway.
They will eventually move to a new facility at Riverside Parkway and Riverside Industrial once it is constructed.
