Cave Spring will celebrate Halloween a little early with the first-ever coffin race.

Teams of 5, including four pushers and one rider, will race custom-built, wheeled coffins in complete head-to-head timed heats.

Check-in for teams will be at 1 p.m.

“The race will actually start at 2:30, so you will want to watch that,” said Kristi Kent with the Georgia’s Rome Office of Tourism. “That’s going to be really cool. It’s their first time doing the coffin race. It’s kind of a do-it-yourself derby, and they are going to have some great costumes going on. It will actually happen right in front of City Hall.”

The coffins must meet certain specs, and there will be awards for the fastest team, best coffin, best Paisley or rider, and best entourage.
