Floyd County Commission proposes 2025 property tax rate; Public hearings set

July 13th, 2025 – 11:00 PM

WRGA Staff Reports –

Information provided by John Bailey, Floyd County Clerk’s Office:

The Floyd County Board of Commissioners is considering setting the 2025 property tax rate at a level not to exceed 9.5 mills. This proposed rate reflects a 6.1% increase over the rollback rate of 8.954 mills — the rate that would keep property tax payments roughly the same as the previous year.

Property taxes help fund a range of essential local services, including public safety, emergency response, road maintenance, parks, and other government operations.

Tax bills are determined by calculating 40% of a property’s assessed value, then multiplying that figure by the total millage rate. The final bill may be reduced depending on any exemptions a property owner qualifies for, such as the Homestead Exemption. Total millage rates include both the rate set by the Floyd County Commission and the separate rate set by the Floyd County Board of Education. For 2025, the school board has announced its intention to adopt a rate of 16.831 mills, which matches its rollback rate.

The methods used to assess property values and calculate taxes are set by the Georgia General Assembly. However, Floyd County has expanded the local Homestead Exemption beyond the state minimum, which may provide additional savings to eligible homeowners.

Because the proposed county rate exceeds the rollback rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings before the rate can be formally adopted. Residents are encouraged to attend any of the upcoming hearings to learn more and provide feedback:
